The talking elevator The talking elevator

  • Setup: In fancy hotels, the elevator (lift) says the floor number out loud, in a soft woman's voice.
  • Why it's funny: Fluffy flirts with a machine. Floor by floor, the voice sounds more excited, like a date that is going well. “All the way” has two meanings: to the top floor, and (cheeky) all the way in romance. He wants to “see how this ends”, as if the elevator is a love story.
Cụm bỏ túi: I'm like, “…” (= I said / I thought (telling a story)) You know what I'm saying? (= Do you understand? (casual))
0:00
They put us at a hotel right across the street.
Họ cho bọn tôi ở khách sạn bên kia phố.
0:02
And you know, you know when you’re in a good hotel when you get inside of the elevator, and it talks.
0:10
It’s one of those.
Kiểu thế này.
0:14
“Second floor.” “Third floor.” I’m like, “Man, she sounds hot.” “Fourth floor. Mmmm.” “Fifth floor. Oh, yeah.” Martin asked me, “How far you going up?” I said, “All the way.” I gotta see how this ends. You know what I’m saying?
“Tầng hai.” “Tầng ba.” Tôi nói “Trời, giọng hấp dẫn thế.” “Tầng bốn.” “Tầng năm.” “Ôi trời.” Martin hỏi tôi “Cậu lên tầng mấy?” Tôi nói “Lên hết luôn.” Tôi muốn biết kết thúc thế nào. Hiểu chứ?
0:45
And by the way, since the last time we were here, I’ve had a few things change in my life.
À mà từ lần trước tụi tôi tới đây, đời tôi thay đổi vài chuyện.
Cảnh 2 0:49 – 1:43

The fake death The fake death

  • Setup: TMZ is a gossip website. Diabetes is a sugar illness. 31 October is Halloween, the night children collect bags of candy.
  • Why it's funny: Two jokes. First: when you die, people write beautiful things about you, and Fluffy enjoys reading his own death story. Second: a diabetic dying on Halloween, the big candy day, fits too perfectly — like Santa dying on Christmas Eve, his busiest night. The fake story sounds like a bad joke.
Cụm bỏ túi: go viral (past: it went viral) a hell of a … (= a really big / surprising … (friends only))
0:49
Some things happened that were so crazy that I couldn’t even believe it was a possibility.
0:54
First thing that happened was, I had my first ever celebrity death hoax.
Chuyện đầu tiên: lần đầu đời tôi bị dính tin đồn người nổi tiếng chết (death hoax).
1:02
Meaning that someone faked my death on the Internet, and it went viral.
1:08
Someone wrote an amazing article that was read by over 30 million people that was so good, even I was like, “Oh, my God. I was so nice.”
1:22
TMZ reported it for 30 minutes, until they called my publicist and confirmed that I was still alive.
1:26
The article said that I had died October 31 from complications of Type II diabetes.
Bài báo đó nói tôi chết ngày 31 tháng 10 do căn bệnh tiểu đường tuýp 2.
1:35
And I’m thinking to myself, “That’s a hell of a day to kill a diabetic.” You know what I mean? That’s like killing Santa on Christmas Eve.

“You dead?” “You dead?”

  • Setup: Martin is Fluffy's old friend. He also works for Fluffy, so Fluffy pays his salary.
  • Why it's funny: Thirty million readers, one phone call. And Martin calls about his job, not his friend: “verify that he still had employment” uses very formal words for a very selfish reason. Then the best part: “If you were dead, you would have texted me.” Dead people can't text! And Fluffy agrees, proudly.
Cụm bỏ túi: You dead? (= Are you dead? (close friends only)) I figured. (= I thought so.) would've + past participle (= something that did not happen)
1:46
Thirty million people read this article.
1:48
No one thought to call me.
Chẳng ai thèm gọi tôi.
1:51
Except Martin.
Trừ Martin.
1:58
Martin was the only one that called me.
Chỉ có Martin gọi tôi.
2:01
And I think that was just to verify that he still had employment.
2:08
I got that phone call. “Hello?” Martin was like, “Hey.
Tôi nhận cuộc gọi. “Alo?” Martin nói “Này.
2:15
You dead?” “No, man. I’m good.” “I figured. You would’ve texted me.” And I would have, ’cause that’s the kind of friend I am.
'Chết chưa?' 'Chưa, tao khỏe.' 'Tao đoán vậy. (Chết thì) mày đã nhắn tin cho tao rồi.' Và đúng là tôi sẽ nhắn thật, vì tôi là kiểu bạn như thế.
Cảnh 4 2:27 – 2:47

“Welcome back.” “Welcome back.”

  • Setup: Frankie is Fluffy's teenage son. Teenagers often answer in a flat, bored voice. Comedians call this deadpan.
  • Why it's funny: Frankie's friends asked, “Is your dad OK?” Frankie did not know, because he had not seen his dad — they live in the same house! He did not check and he did not worry. “Welcome back” is what you say after a holiday, not after a death. Zero emotion: that is the joke.
Cụm bỏ túi: apparently (= it seems; I heard (not sure)) What'd you …? (= What did you …? (fast speech))
2:27
I even asked my son, Frankie. I said, “Frankie, did you hear I died?” “That’s what they meant.” “What do you mean, ‘That’s what they meant’?” “My friends were asking if you were okay.” “What’d you tell them?” “I hadn’t seen you.” “So apparently I died.” “Welcome back.”
Tôi hỏi cả con trai, Frankie. Tôi nói “Frankie, con biết bố chết chưa?” “Thì ra là vậy.” “‘Thì ra là vậy’ là ý gì?” “Bạn con hỏi bố có sao không.” “Thế con nói sao?” “Con không thấy bố.” “Thế thì chắc là bố chết rồi.” “Mừng trở lại.”
Cảnh 5 2:50 – 3:44

College: “Mm-mmm.” College: “Mm-mmm.”

  • Setup: In the USA, many children leave home at 18 to go to college. Parents are often happy (and free!) when that happens.
  • Why it's funny: The audience claps: great, the boy will graduate. Fluffy says: don't clap — he is not leaving home! “Just now” means Frankie started thinking about college this second, only because Dad asked. Dad offers to pay for everything; the son answers with a sound. Big offer, tiny answer.
Cụm bỏ túi: make it happen (= do what is needed) no matter where … (= it doesn't matter where)
2:50
And that’s another thing that’s changed.
Và một điều nữa cũng thay đổi.
2:52
My son, Frankie, is now 18 years old.
Con trai tôi, Frankie, năm nay 18 tuổi.
2:57
And one week away from graduation.
3:07
You guys are clapping, but he’s not leaving.
3:10
I asked him. “Frankie, what do you want to do with your life?” “Mm-mmm.” “Have you thought about college?” “Just now.” I’m like, “Frankie, you do realize that all you need to do is get accepted.
3:22
I tell a lot of jokes. I will pay for your entire college education, no matter where you want to go.” “As long as you get accepted. What do you think about that?” “Mm-mmm.” I say, “You want to go to school in California, we’ll make it happen.
3:41
You want to go out of state, we’ll make it happen.

“Hey, Dad.” “Hey, Dad.”

  • Setup: Fluffy is a famous comedian and Frankie's friends are his fans. But to Frankie, he is just Dad.
  • Why it's funny: Parents love it when their kids' friends say what the parents say — free help! “My dad doesn't even trust me to walk” is a big exaggeration. Frankie is numb to his famous dad: Fluffy is only the man who says “take a shower”. The friends see a star from heaven, with singing and doves. Frankie sees Dad.
Cụm bỏ túi: bring friends over (= invite them to your home) on the other hand (= but, the opposite side) be numb to … (= feel nothing about it any more)
3:44
I love my son very much, you guys.
Tôi rất yêu con trai tôi.
3:46
It’s just that sometimes he doesn’t get the position he’s in.

3:54
He brings his friends over the house, and they’re constantly saying what I’m saying.
Nó mang bạn đến nhà, và chúng liên tục nói điều tôi đang nói.
3:58
And as a parent, anytime you tell your kids something, that’s one thing.
4:02
When you can get their friends to say what you say, you can’t pay for that.
Nếu bạn làm cho bạn nó nói hộ điều đó, thì đó là vô giá.
4:06
And they’re always doing it. “Frankie, you’re lucky, man.
Và chúng toàn thế. “Frankie, cậu thật may mắn.
4:09
Your dad’s trying to help you go to college.
Bố cậu giúp cậu vào đại học.
4:11
My dad wants me to get a job.
Bố tớ muốn tớ đi làm.
4:12
Frankie, you’re lucky, man. Your dad’s trying to give you a car.
Frankie, cậu thật may mắn. Bố cậu cố mua xe cho cậu.
4:15
My dad doesn’t even trust me to walk.
Bố tớ còn chả để tớ đi bộ. Cậu thật may mắn.”
4:17
You’re lucky, man.” And I hear this, and I’m like, “I love these kids.” Because my son is very numb to this situation.
'Cậu may thật đấy.'
4:29
He’s very numb to all of you, and he’s very numb to “Fluffy.” Okay, he doesn’t see Fluffy. He sees “Dad! Dad!” I’m Dad. I’m the guy that tells him clean your room, take a shower and put on deodorant, which he does very well now!
4:51
But you guys saw what I had to do to make that happen.

They still geek out.
Tụi nó vẫn phát cuồng (geek out) như fan.
4:59
I walk into the living room. They’re all sitting there.
5:02
Frankie sees me. “Hey, Dad.” His friends see me, they see this.
5:16
With, like, doves. Can you imagine if every time you walked into a room, that happened?
5:24
“He’s here.”
“Chú ấy kìa.”

PHẦN 3

Ngữ Pháp Thực Chiến Trong Phim

Telling a story with “be like”: I'm like … / he was like … Telling a story with “be like”: I'm like … / he was like …

When Americans tell a funny story, they often use be like instead of said or thought. After like come the person's exact words, and the speaker copies the voice. That is why stand-up is full of it. Fluffy uses it five times in this clip. It is very common in speech, but do not use it in formal writing.

Công thức
I'm like / he was like / they were like + “exact words (or a sound, a face)”
Câu thực tế trong phim
  • I’m like, “Man, she sounds hot.”
  • Even I was like, “Oh, my God. I was so nice.”
  • Martin was like, “Hey. You dead?”
  • I’m like, “I love these kids.”
So sánh để không nhầm
Martin asked me, “How far you going up?” ↔ Martin was like, “Hey. You dead?”
Asked / said = neutral. Was like = act it out, with the voice.
I'm thinking to myself, “That's a hell of a day …” ↔ I'm like, “I love these kids.”
Both can show a thought. Be like is more casual.
⚠️ Lỗi hay gặp Not “He liked, ‘Hey.’” and not “He was like said …”. Use be + like + the words: He was like, “Hey.” Not “He liked, ‘Hey.’” and not “He was like said …”. Use be + like + the words: He was like, “Hey.”

Kiểm tra nhanh ngữ pháp: Read: “I'm like, ‘Man, she sounds hot.’” — “Martin was like, ‘Hey. You dead?’” — “I'm like, ‘I love these kids.’” What comes after like?
